Dr. Puccio is a Board-Certified Veterinary Surgeon who graduated from Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1995. She received the prestigious American College of Veterinary Surgeons Award during her senior year. She went on to complete a one-year internship in small animal medicine and surgery at The Animal Medical Center in New York City, and then completed her post-doctoral surgical internship and residency training at Long Island Veterinary Specialists. She was accepted to the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2005.   Dr. Puccio has been published in the Journal of American Animal Hospital Association for research on canine elbow dysplasia and has received surgical certifications in both Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy and Tibial Tuberosity Advancement.

As a Board-Certified Veterinary Surgeon, Dr. Puccio has been training both surgical residents and surgical interns at the hospitals where she has worked over the last 17 years. Dr. Puccio developed and started the Small Animal Surgical Residency Program at VMCLI where she formerly worked for 13 years.

In her spare time, Dr. Puccio enjoys boating, kayaking and fishing on Long Island, as well running. She has run the New York City Marathon three (3) times and continues to stay active as a member of the New York Road Runners Club. She runs in organized races, predominantly those that donate to needy charities, health, and community concerns.

Theresa Puccio has an MBA in Finance and is a Certified Treasury Professional (CTP), and a Certified Financial Risk Manager (FRM) which is a globally recognized risk management certification in over 141 countries.  She has 20 years of professional work experience in Finance, most at a management level, in both the public and private sectors.  Her specialties include Cash Management, Liquidity Management, Investment Consulting, Cash Flow Forecasting, Budgeting, and Policies and Procedures.  Ms. Puccio has held numerous positions as a Corporate Treasurer at mid to large corporations and has been responsible for over $2 billion of cash and investments, as well as managing debt portfolios of more than $800 million.

Ms. Puccio is a results-oriented and hands-on individual with solid experience in a vast array of disciplines in Finance, as well as staff management, customer service, and even medical supplies purchasing and inventory control.  At VSCLI, she will provide strong leadership on the finance, operational, and human resource sides of the business to ensure that VSCLI’s mission is upheld while growing its business.  Ms. Puccio will guide VSCLI’s Team of talented and highly skilled veterinary professionals to delivering the very best care to our patients, while staying committed to our core values.  Her focus is not only to lead VSCLI to be the premier Emergency and Specialty Referral Hospital on the east coast, but to also be the most desired Veterinary hospital to work, from the employee-experience/perspective.

Ms. Puccio grew up with dogs, cats, and horses and loves all kinds of animals.  Ms. Puccio graduated with honors from Hofstra University for both her undergraduate and graduate degrees.  Ms. Puccio has traveled to well over 50 countries in all seven (7) continents, speaks three languages, and is a competitive volleyball player.  She was a full scholarship Division I volleyball player in college and later became a marathoner and Ironman athlete, who competed in Ironman Brazil, Ironman South Africa, and Ironman China.  She has trained as a triathlete with various Teams and groups in a dozen countries.   She has run the New York City Marathon three times and more than 10 full marathons globally.  She also loves to ski, play golf and tennis and stays active with her ten year old son.  VSCLI will be led by Ms. Puccio’s unparalleled leadership and commitment to both excellence and success.

We are so pleased to have Dr. Jennifer Short join VSCLI on our Surgical team. Dr. Short received her veterinary degree from Texas A&M University in 2007. She was the Hubert Schmidt scholarship recipient her 3rd and 4th years and served as president of her veterinary school class. Dr. Short went on to complete a one-year internship in small animal medicine and surgery at the Angell Animal Medical Center in Boston. She completed her postdoctoral surgical internship in Connecticut before moving to Long Island. Dr. Short finished her residency training on Long Island in 2014 and has been practicing surgery on Long Island ever since.

Dr. Short is a highly experienced specialty surgeon, performing a wide arrange of orthopedic, soft tissue, neurosurgery, and oncologic surgeries.

Dr. Short lives in Huntington, minutes from VSCLI’s hospital.  In her spare time, Dr. Short enjoys spending time with her husband and three dogs. She is an avid runner and enjoys kayaking and traveling.

Dr. Mausser went to vet school at Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine and finished her clinical year training at North Carolina State University in 2019.  She then went on to complete a small animal rotating internship from 2020-2021, where she fell in love with the fast-paced environment and the compassionate care associated with emergency and critical care medicine.

After working in varying emergency and surgical facilities, Dr. Mausser has chosen to make VSCLI her new home, and we can’t be more happy and proud to have her on our Team!  Dr. Mausser has great leadership whether in the Emergency Room, ICU, or the Surgery Room, and she enjoys mentoring our support staff.

When she’s not dedicating her time to her patients, Dr. Mausser is spending time with her boyfriend and her three “purrfect” cats: Cuh, Kreacher, and Tuna. She is an avid reader (loves Harry Potter), and enjoys horse-back riding, crocheting, and ceramics! Dr. Mausser is very excited about helping you and your fur babies in your time of need at VSCLI!

Dr. Hooman Mesgarani is a dedicated veterinarian with a passion for animal welfare and healthcare. Originally from Iran, Dr. Mesgarani brings a wealth of international experience and expertise to the Veterinary Surgical Center of Long Island. After completing veterinary school at Ferdowsi University of Mashhad in Iran, Dr. Mesgarani pursued further specialization in Small and large animal Surgery Residency Program in Iran between 2012 and 2016, then continued education in horse lameness at the Ohio State University, where he gained valuable insights and skills. He also did a specialized Internship in Small Animal Surgery at the Veterinary Medical Center of Long Island under supervision of Dr. Puccio.

Driven by a commitment to providing the highest standard of care, Dr. Mesgarani is known for his compassionate approach and meticulous attention to detail. He believes in building strong relationships with both patients and their human companions, ensuring comprehensive and personalized treatment plans. With a multicultural background, Dr. Mesgarani values diversity and embraces opportunities to learn from different perspectives. His dedication to continuous learning and innovation ensures that He stays at the forefront of advancements in veterinary care.

Outside of work, Dr. Mesgarani enjoys swimming, hiking, and exploring the natural beauty of Long Island. He is excited to be part of the Veterinary Surgical Center team and looks forward to serving the community with integrity and excellence.
